There has been some confusion regarding the rules on using the apron on roval circuits such as Daytona Road and Charlotte Roval.

The rules regarding this are laid out in the FIRST Sporting Code.

8.1.1.8.
Drivers can only use the racing surface for Qualifying and Racing. The apron and pit road are not defined as
racing surfaces. Drivers may not use the apron or pit road to gain an advantage in Qualifying or Racing. Any
advantage will be determined by iRacing.com. A protest may be filed through the proper channels for this offense.

iRacing staff have provided various clarifications in the iRacing forum on 2020-08-07 and 2021-12-06.

Using the apron to pass or gain a time advantage in high banked corners on ovals/rovals is not allowed. Examples would be NASCAR turns 1, 2, 3, 4 at this track. This is a protestable offense and could result in account suspension or loss of account privileges if a violation is found while reviewing the protest.

You may use the apron on the straightaway or tri–oval portion of the racetrack in attempt to pass. However, if you attempt to do so it is your responsibility to return to the racing surface safely. Failure to do so and causing an accident is considered a form of reckless contact and is a protestable offense, which could result in account suspension or loss of account privileges if a violation is found while reviewing the protest. – iRacing staff Samuel Roush
